Opening a new retail store is a decision with excitement, expectations and several challenges. But behind the decoration, the merchandise and the window, there is a critical technological mechanism that must function flawlessly from day one: the cash register, the POS and the network. If one of these three pillars is not set up correctly, the problem will appear at the most inopportune moment — usually in front of a customer.
The cash register is the fiscal “heart” of the store. Before starting operation, it is necessary to have selected a model that meets the applicable specifications and has been correctly declared to the competent authorities. The configuration should not be done haphazardly. The VAT rates, sales departments, date and time, as well as the company details must have been entered correctly. A simple error in the VAT or in the device settings can create problems both in the accounting picture and in a potential audit. At the same time, it is important to have test receipts and a check of the day-end closing process, in order to verify that everything is working smoothly.
The network and Internet connection are the “invisible” but absolutely critical factor. In a modern store, the cash register, POS, commercial program, security cameras and often even music or orders depend on the correct functioning of the network. Using simple household equipment is often not enough for professional use. A reliable router, proper wiring and a stable Internet line are basic requirements. Ideally, the POS and critical devices should operate on a separate, protected network, while the existence of a basic firewall and a backup connection (such as 4G/5G backup) can prevent losses in the event of a failure.
A few days before the official opening, it is worth carrying out a full operation simulation. Issue test receipts, make card payments, check the Internet speed and confirm that the day-closing process is completed without errors. This “dress rehearsal” significantly reduces first-day stress and reveals any missteps early on.
Opening a retail store is not just about products and sales. It’s about organization, technology readiness, and compliance. When the cash register, POS, and network are properly designed, the business starts on a solid footing and can focus on what really matters: customer service and sales growth.
